Brain!

In science class this week we were studying the body systems. Yesterday we talked about the nervous system, which includes your spinal cord, nerves and your brain. Today, to help us remember the brain, Mr. Nelson served us a brain to eat at snack time! It’s not everyday your teacher feeds you brains!! It was gray colored, slimy and delicious. It tasted a little like vanilla pudding with strawberry sauce. Zombies didn't eat our brain - WE DID!!!

Longhouses 2013

This week we were studying The Indians of Michigan - where they lived and what they used to survive.  Then Mr. Nelson announced the Longhouse project and we were all beaming!  He told us to get whatever natural materials we could find outside our homes and bring them in.  The whole class brought in a bunch of stuff the next day and then we started.  It was really fun!  We used things like twigs, sticks, moss, and grass.  Luke’s and Ethan’s moms came in to help. When  we finished we were able to display them in the hallway.  They all looked GREAT! - by Christina

Greenfield Village

For our last and BEST field trip this year, we went to Greenfield Village. Mr. Nelson gave us a scavenger hunt to use to explore the many areas of the village. We did lots of walking and learned a few interesting things too!

1. Edison spoke a nursery rhyme into the first phonograph (“Mary had a little lamb...”)

2. Old time trains are smelly but cool (and loud too!)

2. SamB likes cars (especially Model T’s)

3. It's not a good place to go if you have allergies (and no medicine)

4. History can be fun. (Really!)

4th Grade Chapel

This week, the 4^th grade class was in charge of chapel.  We did a play based on the parable of the sower and the seed. Everyone got a chance to be involved.  Some read, some acted like birds, rocks, seeds, or weeds.  The whole school loved it and we had a blast.

State Reports!

Hot Air Balloons! 2013

 

 The hot air balloon project we do in science class is dangerously cool and AWESOME! On Wednesday, we took our time and constructed tissue paper hot air balloons.  This morning we launched them! In order to give them the most space, we launched them from the baseball diamond.  We use a camp stove with a long chimney.  The team holds the bottom opening of their balloon over the chimney, lets the hot air fill the insides, counts to five and LAUNCH!  Everyone cheers as the balloons rises low, high, really high, or not at all.  This year one balloon went higher and farther than any other balloon ever it may still be up there! Two others burnt up into flames before they launched (first time that ever happened too - cool!)

We LOVE chess!

Earlier this year, Mr. Nelson taught the class how to play chess. For some of us, it was our first time playing but for other it was a chance to review and practice some more.  But one thing is sure ~ We LOVE chess!  It’s like a puzzle that makes you think.  We not only get to play against our friends but we get to challenge Mr. Nelson too.  If you can win against him three times, you get put into the 4th grade Chess Hall of Fame.  No one has made it this year yet- but we’ll keep working at it. He’s lost twice so far this year.

OWL PELLETS!

Mr. Nelson paired us up and gave each group some tools like tooth picks, tweezers, a bone diagram and an owl pellet wrapped in foil. We then went into the art room to get started.  At first we were scared to touch it, but Mr. N reminded us that all the pellets were cleaned and sterilized. They are fragile, so we carefully pulled apart the pellet looking for the gross stuff inside.  Actually it wasn’t really gross at all.  It was COOL!  We found mouse and vole skulls, a lot of bones and a ton of fur. We were able to see what kind of animal the owl ate.
